WISDOM TOOTH SURGERY

What are wisdom teeth?Wisdom teeth are the 3rd molar teeth and can erupt into your mouth from your late teenage years onwards. Why do they need to be removed?Sometimes wisdom teeth become impacted (or trapped) and can cause pain, swelling, infection or damage to the adjacent tooth. How are wisdom teeth removed? The procedure involves injecting local anaesthetic into the gum, lifting the gum back and dividing the tooth into pieces to remove it. Stitches are placed in the gum to help the wound heal quickly. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation if you are nervous about having it done. What are the risks of wisdom tooth removal? Most risks associated with wisdom tooth removal are temporary and improve within 7 days of surgery. Below the lower wisdom teeth lies a nerve that supplies feeling to the lip, chin, teeth, gums and tongue on that side of the mouth. This nerve is not a movement nerve. There is a small risk that this nerve can get bruised during the procedure and it can feel different afterwards. This risk is low and usually the altered feeling resolves spontaneously. Sometimes we may take a 3D scan of the wisdom tooth and the nerve if they look close to one another on the X-ray. In some cases if the wisdom tooth and nerve are too close to each other a procedure called a Coronectomy can be performed. What is coronectomy of a wisdom tooth? This procedure involves exposing the wisdom tooth and cutting it in half. By removing the top part this usually resolves any symptoms and protects the adjacent tooth. The root remains in the jaw and usually causes no problems. How is wisdom tooth coronectomy performed? The procedure involves injecting local anaesthetic into the gum, lifting the gum back and dividing the tooth in half and removing the crown (the top part). The remaining root is smoothed down. Stitches are placed in the gum to help the wound heal quickly. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation if you are nervous about having it done. What are the risks of wisdom tooth coronectomy? Most risks associated with wisdom tooth coronectomy are temporary and improve within 7 days of surgery. Below the lower wisdom teeth lies a nerve that supplies feeling to the lip, chin, teeth, gums and tongue on that side of the mouth. This nerve is not a movement nerve. There is a small risk that this nerve can get bruised during the procedure and it can feel different afterwards. This risk is much lower when carrying out a coronectomy compared with complete wisdom tooth removal. The other risk is that the root in the jaw can migrate and erupt into the mouth. This happens in roughly 15% of cases. However if the root has moved, it migrates away from the nerve and therefore is usually safe to remove. How long is the recovery following wisdom tooth surgery?Pain and swelling usually lasts between 3-7 days after tooth removal. Most patients can return to work between 24-48 hours after the procedure.

ORAL SURGERY

What is a dental extraction?A dental extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. This could be due to multiple reasons such as infection, gum disease or unrestorable tooth decay. What do you experience when having a dental extraction?Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth. Then you experience pushing, pressure and sometimes buzzing from the drill. There is absolutely no pain. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation if you are nervous about having it done. How is the tooth removed? The procedure involves injecting local anaesthetic into the gum, lifting the gum back and dividing the tooth into pieces to remove it. Stitches are placed in the gum to help the wound heal quickly. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation if you are nervous about having it done. How long is the recovery following a dental extraction?Pain and swelling usually lasts between 3-7 days after tooth removal. Most patients can return to work 24-48 hours after the procedure. Routine Paracetamol and Ibuprofen is usually enough to control any discomfort.

DENTAL IMPLANTS

What is a dental implant?A dental implant is a way of replacing a tooth that has been removed. The dental implant is a titanium screw that integrates into the jaw and a tooth is fixed onto it. It is a fixed option that has no negative impacts on the other teeth. It looks and feels like a natural tooth. How is a dental implant placed? The procedure involves injecting local anaesthetic into the gum, lifting the gum back and drilling to create space for the implant. This is then slotted into place. Stitches are placed in the gum to help the wound heal quickly. The procedure can be performed under intravenous sedation if you are nervous about having it done. Once the implant is integrated, the final crown can be made to fit on top and to restore your smile! What are the risks of dental implants? Most risks associated with dental implants are temporary and improve within 7 days of surgery. We always take a 3D scan prior to implant placement to assess the position of any sensitive structures nearby. Uncommon risks include fractures of the implant or crown or gum recession around implants. Very rarely implants do not integrate but they can usually be repeated if this happens. How long is the recovery following dental implant placement?Pain and swelling usually lasts between 2-7 days after the procedure. Most patients can return to work between 24-48 hours after the procedure.
